MARK RENO, OFF ON ANOTHER ADVENTURE

    I had the pleasure of knowing the remarkable Mark Reno.  Cancer got the best of him last night. His family wrote this lovely obituary,

    Mark Wood Reno was The Adventurer of an adventurous family.

His parents, Jane and Henry Reno, came to Miami in the roaring twenties. They saw the awesome destruction of the great hurricanes of 1926, the 1928, and 1935 and still chose Florida. They both became reporters and raised four children out at the west end of North Kendall Drive when it was pine and palmetto and cow pasture

   Mark’s sister, Janet Reno, was Dade County State’s Attorney and Attorney General of the United States. His older brother, Bob, was a columnist for Newsday. His sister Maggy Hurchalla, was a County Commissioner in Martin County.

    Mark was a game warden, a carpenter, a boat captain, an alligator wrestler, a scuba diver, a treasure hunter, a bailiff, a tree nurse, a paratrooper, a story teller, a cowboy, and a hog hunter. He has been everywhere and done everything. Everything he did he learned to do well, from building log cabins and Indian chickees to spearing a grouper free diving while fending off a reef shark at 70 feet.

   He is survived by his sisters, Janet and Maggy, his wife Ann, his children, Douglas and Karin, his beautiful grandchildren: Ella, Chloe, August, Norah Jeanne, and John Henry. He is also survived by admiring nieces and nephews, his pig, Oink, and a legion of honorary nieces and nephews who went camping and boating and diving and sailing with “Unca Marky.”

   No flowers. Instead, he would appreciate donations to the Florida Wildlife Corridor which is working to create a corridor of Florida working ranches and wilderness from the Okefenokee to the Everglades.
